LITTLE Italy, the area of Ipswich around Cox Lane, which since the housing was demolished in the late 1930s has been a car park, was recalled recently in Kindred Spirits by Des Drew of Stutton.

FREDERICK Tibbenham Limited was founded in Ipswich in 1904. The company specialised in making high grade furniture and joinery, period reproductions, including oak panelling and ecclesiastical wood work.


Horse power was far more common when this photograph was taken in Fore Street, Ipswich, around 1930. Fred Maltbysaid “The photograph is of my father-in-law, Ernest Sadd. He worked for William Wakeling, a caterer and removal contracter."100 years of wheel deals in our town?

A CENTURY ago motoring was in its infancy. Crowds then would gather at the rare sight of a motor car. They were the toys of the very rich, way beyond the normal family budget.

As you park your car or walk through the Cox Lane car park, in the Ipswich town centre, it is difficult to imagine the hundreds of families who lived in tiny packed streets, which were demolished in the 1930s as families were moved from poor housing to the new council houses built on the outskirts of town.
