  • No wonder the 'Younger' generation carries on like it does! To many 'Do Gooders' thinking that they KNOW what's best for our Children! How else do they learn? Do the pictures and books at schools around the Country now have to be removed as 'Offensive'?

    Steve Squirrell

  • It's not the images that are the offensive part of IP1 magazine, it's the sycophantic, back-patting content.

    Dan Clark

  • Well said Steve,It must have been a senior citizen who complained.May i suggest we all wrap ourselves up in cotton wool so we are protected from the world!!!

  • IP1's top. i liked the art work, its funny.

    Nick Williamson

  • So, Mrs.Harsant's opinions are the benchmark for censorship in Ipswich then? If Mrs.Harsant, or indeed anyone else, doesn't want to read a particular publication then don't!

    Tony Gomm

  • I've seen the magazine and I can safely say it's all done tastefuly and not at all in an offensive way. If something offends you, don't look at it! The images aren't anything kids will understand, nor will they question it, as it's depicted in an artist manner, not a graphical manner. The council really needs to think before it acts about this kind of thing. I hope they will reconsider and let IP1 keep their funding, Ipswich needs a magazine like this.

  • why is this so shocking, at the end of the day its a local lady depicting written matter, the problem being its about sex. it might not to be to all tastes but if sex was an open subject like in sweden and holland and not seen as something that is frowned upon maybe we wouldnt have so many teen pregenacys and rising STDs. Ip1 writes and illustrates about all diffrent subjects that help younger people, and why shoudnt sex be one of them. ip1 is written by young people for young people.

    joel millerchip

  • This is nothing more than petty hyperbole! One would like to think the Council would not remove all copies of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ from our libraries off the back of one letter of complaint, but after today’s precedent, we cannot be so sure! IP1 should be applauded for its streetwise approach to sexuality. Were it not seen as liberal in some respects, I doubt the more important sexual (health) issues raised would carry as much credence.

    Charlie Hat

  • I have been a keen follower of IP1 for years and cannot believe the mountain that has been made out of this molehill, further compounded by a deliberately misleading article. At no point in today’s paper did the Star’s intrepid reporter mention the fact that the image in question is in fact a ‘cartoon’. I would expect nothing less from lower calibre newspapers, but never thought the Evening Star would stoop this low. Not only is referring to a cartoon as ‘pictures’ and ‘artwork’ deliberately vague, but it begs the tautological question…can a cartoon ever be explicit?

    Chris Lever

  • James is right- kids would overlook the images- they aren't that explicit! I think you're totally overeacting.

  • ONE complaint for a magazine that probably prints 1000s of issues? Why does this one person count more than the 1000s of others who saw the magazine and had no problem with or even enjoyed the content? I've seen the issue and I was glad that a local organisation had the guts to print something that is cutting edge and stands out from all the other work we normally see. If the council do decide to pull funding I for one will be lodging my complaint!

  • Pictures appear in daily newspapers that are much worse. The readers of the mag generally know what to expect which, lets be honest, was promoting a young artist's work. Makes a change from the usual 'hoodie stabbings' that seem to be the mainstay of news regarding my generation. Where has censorship of other mediums led, not to the utopia promised by PC nutjobs. I find Big Brother more offensive and thousands of pre-teens watch that. At least IP1 promotes creativity.

  • ip1 is a unique project and is fantastic at both promoting local artistic talent and raising awareness. We should be proud of their efforts. That the Council, in a knee jerk manner, have chosen to behave in a reactionary and ignorant manner should, of course, surprise no one.

  • this whole thing is jokes! so much for ipswich encouraging student life if it can't even deal with fun illustrations that aren't offensive in the slightest. wow, you'd better get rid of any bikini clad women on billboards, the children might cry.

  • How absolutely ridiculous. The purpose of IP1 is to showcase local artists and designers. It's not as if the images were that graphic! they were very basic sketches. I could understand the problem if they were graphic, but like somebody in an earlier comment has stated, far worse things are printed in the daily press. IP1 provides local students with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their work, to see this result in the end of IP1 would be an incredible shame.

  • Has anyone noticed the best selling national newspaper relentlessly features breasts exposed in a sexually provocative context on the third page? Or that most tabloids are saturated in sexually titillating imagery? All of which are freely available for children to browse through in newsagets/supermarkets/their own houses. Wait, you noticed it too? And now, due to ONE complaint about ONE image amongst several by an ARTIST featured along with an interview explaining the imagery the Council want to withdraw funding? Madness.

  • Get over it art is art in every shape or form

  • This is great publicity for Ip1. ice work indeed.A perfect example of "free publicity" The mags great and I speak from personal experience. Lots of my fellow degree students know this also. IP1 staff work DAMN hard to put the issues out with varied content. A staging platform for new and up and coming artists. I say good luck to them one and all. Don't dare knock them for doing their bit to keep ipswich + alive and on the map.

  • What a joke. Sex exists and young people need to be informed about it. It's the stuffiness and irresponsible attitude of people like Ipswich Borough Council that helps exacerbate the problem of teenage pregnancies and STD's. IP1 Magazine should be credited for a mature approach to a natural subject. I'm so disappointed in the council and their misguided pre-historic attitude. Boo Hiss.

    Laura Norman

  • Ip1 magazine is a fantastic forum for local young creative people to get their work noticed. Something that isn't easy to do, particularly for talented students who need recognition. Without the kind of publicity IP1 offers young people wouldn't get the opportunities that this magazine has created for them by publishing their work. Berry Patten does not deserve to be excluded from these chances just because her CARTOON drawings are on a subject that may be sensitive to some. If you don't like the content of the magazine, don't read it, i don't like the content of the Daily Mail, so i don't read it.

    Jess Broad

  • Well, I do not think the drawing were disruptive! It is Art and some of the great artists have portrayed the power of love making, erotic visual art, naked woman, etc and we look at it as ART. Earlier in this century, artists could be imprisoned for portraying sex but I thought we now live in a modern world, therefore we should not look the illustration of this artist as shamefull, subversive or hurfull, we should celebrate the liberty of Art and enjoyed to have such great local artist who are open-minded. Love is beautiful and therefore ought to be looked at and enjoyed!

    Annelaure misme

  • Any progressive borough council would recognize that public support for local artists far outweighs the very small minority of complainants who find Patten's work offensive. The (typical) reaction of Ipswich Borough Council highlights their backward-thinking nature, their total disregard for local culture, and their disconnectedness from young people in society.

    Lewis Spurgin

  • It would be nonsense to argue that these images are damaging to children, psychology demonstrated long ago that children are far more sexually aware than some would like to admit. But this unimaginative focus on sex is an issue for all ages and is, no doubt, especially offensive to the town’s ethnic religious minorities who are already too marginalised. The magazine should be accessible to everyone. The art in question is crude, immature and looks like the doodling of bored school boys. I find it sad and insulting that the magazine has stooped to appealing to the lowest common denominator and it is only right that it should be reprimanded for its unprofessional error.

  • An utterly ridiculous overreaction by IBC. I suspect they would have put underwear on the Cerne Abbas Giant if it fell within their jurisdiction. Thankfully it doesn't. Unfortunately nor will any other form of artistic expression if our moral guardians roll over after receiving a single complaint.

    Sam Bloomfield

  • This is sad. One passer by who obviously has nothing better to do than judge the all-too-scarce offerings available to Ipswich's youth, and the Council responds by shooting itself in the cultural foot. If the magazine's content 'may have caused offense', after the council's knee-jerk reaction, consider me one offended denizen.

    Jason Last

  • I think without "Pushing the boundaries" or incorporating taboo subjects its hard to gain recognition especially with so many up and coming artists, and to be described as tasteless and inappropriate is ridiculous, I just think its another case "small town mentality " that Ipswich has grown to love.
