Pubs under threat from smoke ban - claim

AS many as 20 pubs in Ipswich could be closed within two years of the new smoking ban being introduced, a top publican has warned.

Shaun de Silva, the town's Pubwatch chief and landlord of the Brewers Arms in Orford Street, told The Evening Star he fears a number of “local boozers” could be lost forever as a result of the ban.

As of July 1 smoking will be prohibited in public spaces throughout England.

Mr de Silva said in the past few months there have already been around 20 pubs in the town on the market out of a total of more than 200.

He said the impact of stay-away drinkers could mean many more pubs going on the market and he fears some may not be bought because of concerns over drops in profit margins.

Mr de Silva, who has spent £20,000 creating a smoking area at the back of the Brewers Arms, said: “I personally think a percentage of pubs will not be able to withstand the smoking ban.

“Some of the heavy boozers will take the attitude that they may as well stay at home with some beers.

“I don't want to scaremonger but statistics in Ireland and Scotland show that 17 per cent of pubs have experienced losses of up to 20pc.

“My concern is some of the pubs will be lost forever, especially ones that could be developed for housing.

“I would say at least ten per cent of pubs in Ipswich will not be around in a couple of years' time.

“It is more than likely it will be the periphery pubs - working men's pubs - that will be affected more than anything.”

The smoking ban will be enforced in Ipswich by the borough council.

Officers say they are concentrating on working with businesses rather than threatening them.

The council has received £64,000 from the Department of Health to help it implement the changes.

  • Another landlord, who at the best of times usually has an empty pub. Look at the location. Not good. No way they can blame the smoking ban on the takings when it happens. If they lose 20pc takings, thats only around a couple of people as it's always empty.

  • Perhaps Me de Silva may like to substantiate his claim by naming some of those he predicts will be closing. In the two year period time we will probably then see he's taking out of his bside.

  • I think there should be a smoking area, so as not to effect the non smokers.

  • I am a firm believer of not having the government of any country tell me what is good for me. On a recent visit to England I had the occasion to visit the "local" where my brother lives. The local pub provided an area where you could have a drink and not smoke. What's wrong with that? Think of all the money and man-hours that will be wasted enforcing the Non-Smoking Law. The government in England is out of control and thereby the citizens of that country are being persecuted.

  • We've had no somking in public areas for years now... And guess what?? the sky isn't falling! its a freash of breath air!. I'm very excited to be coming back to a smokefree uk

    Non Smoker, Perth, Australia

  • Ms Curtis, I agree with you to a point. Smokers are being persecuted but goverments will pay in the end along with non-smokers, as taxes will increase on other things. Tobbaco tax is one of the largest and who gets that money? And what will happen when it is no longer available due to an increase in non-smokers. As to the Goverment of England being out of control they are not alone there are not many places in American that you can light up anymore. Arizona just passed the same smoking law as the UK, California has had it for some time so watch out North Carolina it is coming your way. Then when that is over and done with they will start banning liquor, I venture to say that has killed more, maimed more and destroyed more lives than smoking. Oh by the way California are now trying to pass a law that you cant smoke in your car, apartment balcony nor your backyard if you have non-smoking neighbours. Big brother is slowing eroding rights the world over not just in England.

  • I'd say the 10% estimate is probably on the low side. This coming winter will be the real tester for pub survival & it's the traditional local type pub rather than the food houses that will suffer.Folk will stay at home & enjoy a smoke with beer at a fraction of the pub prices. In a town like Ipswich there will obviously still be pubs to choose from ,but the outlook for some villages looks pretty bleak. Once the sole pub closes then everyone suffers smokers & non smokers alike.

    Dennis, Cambs

  • Im glad to hear that the non smokers are better off now because of the ban on us smokers, and the thing that gets me now is that we the smokers have no rights at all anymore. I work from 6 till 4 and on my break I like to have a smoke and sit down but, in the nasty weather this is not possible we have not been provided with a shelter and this is morally wrong the work place has catered for the non smokers what about us something has to be done.
