New campaign to boost harmony

TRIMLEY: Be better neighbours!

That's the message to immigrant workers involved in a culture clash with villagers - and who are now set to have special sessions to teach them manners and how to behave in England.

Villagers have been left angry at some of the workers getting drunk, fighting and spitting in the street.

Interpreters are to work with the workers currently staying and new arrivals to try to explain the culture differences and what is and what is not acceptable to help everyone live in harmony.

The workers live at the Seven Oaks hostel for foreign workers in Church Lane, Trimley St Mary, and residents have been increasingly anxious about the activities of those staying at the property.

The Felixstowe Safer Neighbourhood Team and Suffolk Coastal housing and legal officers have been working closely with hostel owners Larry Graham and his wife to deal with problems.

Trimley parish and district councillor Graham Harding said: “We have had a number of problems over the past 18 months and the problems impacting on the community have gone on and on.

“My understanding is sometimes there are up to 50 people living there and we had a complaint that one Sunday at 8am there was a fight in a neighbour's driveway.

“Spitting is a big problem too and many people are unhappy about it, though it might be acceptable on the continent.

“The interpreters will help them understand the British way of life and hopefully stabilise the community there.”

Parish and district councillor Richard Kerry said: “It's a clash of cultures - they do things which are normal to them but not to us.”

  • Not just concerned about Seven Oaks but very concerned at the numbers of Europeans being allowed to move into Britain. At times they seem to out number the British and their manners is appalling, just barge you out of the way as if they owned the place. Yes very concerned!!!

  • What a joke !

  • How do we fell about our tax money being used to teach people not to get drunk, fight in the streets and spit everywhere? Personally, I would rather my money was spent on rounding up these unwanted guests and booting them back to Poland!!

  • The whole of the country knows what an absolute 'horlicks' the Government have made of allowing overseas persons to reside in this country in the main via EEC rules. The public are sick and tired of it but what to do, NOTHING. Criminals are allowed in, drinking in the open air in Ipswich is disgraceful with litter at an all time high, I feel sorry for our hard working refuse collectors. Speak no English then come on in. Very basic hard rules are needed but beware our grandchildren will despise what is happening now, pity Enoch was not listened to, a truer statement has never been more purposeful. We have lost it big tiime.

  • I live in Poland, in Kraków. I think those of You who worry so much about lack of good manners among Polish people should come here and see for Yourself how British turists behave themselves during their stay in Kraków. I guess this is what You call "the British way of life". To Polish people it's sheer barbarism. I think You should take into account that people who emigrate sometimes come from real social lows or are criminals running away from Polish police . What makes them behave they way they do it's not their nationality but a specific kind of a social circle from which they come. You don't like Your immigrants? Check their criminal record with Polish police records first. It may explain a lot and save You some trouble. No nationality alone makes people behave like barbarians.

  • When somebody is let into the UK aren't they told about our customs, culture etc. or haven't we go a clue what it is anymore?! Beginning to wonder if there isn't a secret agreement for us to take what the other EU countries don't want?!
