SCORES of workers held a counter-protest opposite the Royal Mail picket line in Ipswich today.

The group of 40 workers, armed with placards and whistles, arrived at the scene of the Royal Mail headquarters in Commercial Road just before midday and set up camp opposite the stunned postal workers.

Their chants of 'Where's Our Post' attracted plenty of attention from passing motorists, many of whom beeped their horns in support.

However Dave Scott, Communication Workers Union branch secretary for Suffolk, said the counter-strike would not deter them.

He said: “This is not going to change the resolve of our postmen. This has probably helped morale.

“The strike is for our customers' future. I do not know if they [protesters] understand that if we put up this fight now, it will mean a better service.

“I think their strike is a bit silly. They do not understand our arguments.”

The counter-protestors, who held banners with slogans like 'Hey There Wait A Minute Mr Postman', were adamant that the postal workers should halt the industrial action and get on with their job.

Steven Wells, a businessman and councillor, who organised the protest, said: “We are not against postal workers but their strikes are hurting our staff and our businesses. It is time to say enough is enough.

“My constituents are also being hurt by these postal strikes, particularly the elderly and vulnerable who rely on getting their post delivered to them.”

One of the protesters, John Saich, said: “Unless we get letters through, we don't get our bonus. Everyone feels strongly about it.”

Around 44,000 members of the CWU are on strike across the country today. Further 24-hour strikes are due to take place tomorrow and Saturday.

Among the reasons for the strike is a fear over job cuts when a new machine to sort mail gets rolled out.

  • Good stuff. These strikers need to know that the recession-hit public doesn't care for their plight. Get on with the job, or more businesses are going to switch TNT, DHL, etc... Then when more job losses occur as an indirect result of their 'action' what will they do?

  • This strike is certainly not Labour's finest hour but the Tories must not gain Ipswich or they’ll have a Commons majority. People can safely vote Labour to stop them without Brown preserving his own majority, whereas further up the Tory target list in Harwich voting Labour is too risky. A win there probably maintains a Labour Commons majority, so in Harwich the Tories must be supported to stop them.

  • Look, we all have to face the prospect of job cuts as and when new machines and computers are developed. That's life. It's a sad fact, but in this day and age, many of us are lucky to have jobs at all, including postal workers. Their selfish action is doing nothing to help other businesses that are already struggling and suffering thanks to the current state this country is in. Well done for making things even worse for the rest of us, as well as yourselves.

  • The postmen on strike are making a rod for their own back! With the help from the union! if they keep striking, people will not use the Royal mail. Then there will be no need for postmen anyway and they will all loose there jobs! Everything else is modernising, seems like blackmail to me.

    Richard ,

  • Good for them giving these postal workers a taste of their own medicine...People afre losing their jobs every day and others are having to take pay cuts, yet this tribe of greedy protagonists are trying to hold the country to ransom with their demands..shame on all of them. Oh and what will happen when the strike is over and the backlog of mail needs to be sorted?...Plenty of overtime for the strikers!, who will say they will need that to make up for the lost money whilst striking!...cart and horse comes to mind!

  • You can never stand in the way of technological advances. If the communication workers union had been the government for the past 100 years we would still be riding horse & carts, women would be denied the vote, children would still be going up chimneys and yobs would be sent to Australia (now there's an idea!)

  • Have the postie's not worked it out yet. That the public are fed up of hearing them go on and on about modernisation. We don't care. You can strike all you want, it will be the posties that lose out in the end as you won't have a job as everyone will be using some othermeans to get parcels and post arond britian....

  • I see the post workers point but at the same time, I need my post!

  • It's about time someone stood up and told them to get back to work. It is shocking they can drag this country down with thier daft demands. Everyone else is in danger of lossing thier jobs as well! These people need to grow up.

    John Smith

  • They should get back to work.

  • "It will mean a better service" - how?! Fed up of hearing CWU use this as their defence, yet they're unable to say HOW it will improve the service. Except lining the posties pockets. Even when they're not striking, our post is always late!!

  • when did you ever hear of DHL, FEDEX, TNT, UPS etc and the other global carriers go on strike? its like these ppl think we are living in 70's Britain with black outs of electricity etc.... WAKE UP ROYAL MAIL WORKERS.... YOU ARE NOT "THE POST OFFICE" (a public monopoly) ANYMORE.. YOU ARE IN A GLOBAL MARKET... and i read lot of issues cos postmen who used to knock off 2-4 hours early after they finish their shift now getting upset??? they really dont get it... stop striking.. get with the program or another UK PLC will be overrun by competition and you will be out of a job. I actually choose not to use Royal Mail because i find the service is appalling compared to DHL and FEDEX in particular. Stop being victims... deliver high quality services with SLA's like your foreign competition and listen to what your management are telling you because if you don't, then soon, i am going to be paying for your benefits and i will have even less sympathy for you. Honestly you are a commercial company yet you behave like public sector workers still... same attitude and mindset... I strongly support your management on your behalf.

  • I think the two photos tell a story in their own right but let's not go into that ;-) As a lot of other comments have highlighted - you can't halt the tide of progress and modernisation. I seem to recall reading a study in the dim and distant past that suggested when the post office employs temporary staff over the busy Christmas period, those temporary staff are actually more productive than the post office long termers...anyway, how hard can it be sorting letters or posting them through a slot in a house door. Not exactly rocket science...and it's probably going to get easier with modernisation. It's time to get back to reality and get back to work, whilst you still have a company and job to go back to. I'm sure there are plenty of other people that would love a nice cushy job at the Post Office.
