As usual the government have us believe that prisons such as Hollesely as secure and only for non dangerous prisoners.
The fact is that the government do not care as long as prisoners are housed, they can then say they are being tough on crime and sending people to prison however Hollesely Bay cannot really be called a prison as it is more like a holiday resort and in fact is called Holiday Bay by those who have been.
Prisoners go missing regularly as they can simply walk out, this I find incredible considering some are there on life sentences for murder.
When are the politicions going to do what they have promised for several years and actually be tough on crime and specifically those who commit crime, its not difficult as if there are not enough prisons then simply build some more.
I do realise that funding is an issue so why do the fat politicions not take a pay cut or simply take less allowances.

I am not living locally, so can some one advise if this is a ref to an "open prison"?
If so, can I add that though you may have worked nearby I have often informed my children that I went to SCHOOL AT AN OPEN PRISON!!!! For a short period I lived in Lancashire in 1962. An old disused RAF station was the home for Kirkham prison ............ and the primary school I attended was in the same site and as children we went through the same external gate, the prisoners turning left once inside the gate whilst we, the children, went straight ahead.
If a school for very young children was placed so close, I would guess that shows the measure of how serious the offences were deemed to be for prisoners in open prison at that time. I assume that is still the case for open prisons according to the national policy. Certainly I would be surprised if those known to be dangerous to the public would be held in an OPEN prison.

The YOI part of Hollesley bay (Warren Hill) is fine, its the adults prison over the road that has the bad escapee record.

i just remember it as the YOI from my time working near there, the prison is a complete joke and only 1 of the 3 who escaped last week have been recaptured,if you go to prison then you must have the preventitive measures to stop them escaping.Hollesley bay has clearly failed and needs the Home office to sort it out before someone gets hurt by these escaped convicts desperate to stay out !!

None of you locals have yet answered the question, is this an "OPEN prison". The direction of any EFFECTIVE debate is dependent on the answer to that question. If you do not know the answer you do not have any concept of the kind of pressure that is appropriate to give to the authorities.

In 1982 Warren Hill opened to accommodate Cat C young offenders in a closed environment alongside Hollesley Bay Open prison. In April 2002 though retaining some shared services, Hollesley Bay and Warren Hill became separate establishments, the Open complex retaining the name Hollesley Bay.

Thank you. so we are discuusing an OPEN prison. The issue there fore is whether the facts suggest the prisoners are appropriate to be held there on the basis of the types of crimes they have committed. Open prisons themselves, by definition, will always be more open than others. To increase the security beyond normal OPEN prison standards will mean changing the status of the prison which therefore means your local prison can house more dangerous prisoners. Some how I doubt thats what most of you would wish to happen in accordance with the present national policy.

Its both, the Hollesley Bay open prison used to be a young offenders institution but now is mainly cat D adults. Warren Hill is a closed ( for want of a better term ) prison. They are collectively referred to as the Colony locally.
When I first moved into the area in the early 80s and was based at Bawdsey, we used to get 'Absconder Alerts' on average about twice a week and the situation has never seemed to improve. It got to the stage that it was so common that the local press only ever mentioned them on slow news days or if it was someone 'dangerous'. It was rarely reported which unit they had escaped from, although at that time you could tell by the age of the escapee.
Oh, the good old days....picking them up off Bawdsey beach, throwing them into the cell in the RAF guardroom and phoning up for transport to collect them. ![Big Smile [:D]](/cs_es/cs/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

So you have 2 different establishments. (one establishment cannot be classified in bot ways). Which establishment is causing the concern? the open or the closed?

ok. can some one explain what is the purpose of threads such as this? An issue has been raised that would concern the public within your locality. Once a question is raised to clarify what is the type of establishment the people who have concerns mysteriously escape over the wall of this cyber establishment. If the thread is intended merely as an opportunity to have a rant which will never change the real world then that would be a possible explanation to the mystery. without a real understanding as per the question I raised then it can only be such a rant. If you want to change the world then we need to grasp the logic of what are the real issues to contend for. I hope one of you can enlighten me a bit. Thanks

israel, thanks for your response. you will notice from the quote below that there appears to be different understandings from the locals as to the classification of the establishment. My post was intndeed to endeavpour to be of help to you, but the help is difficult to give if there is not a unified understanding of the situation. I certainly was not intending to be critical even if thats how it appeared. my posts up till this date would support the view that I do not see message boards to be used appropriately if it is merely used for an arguement. sorry for any missunderstanding and hope that the lovcal population will establish what is the appropriateway forward from here

yes it is an open prison.
as a former inmate there myself, i to agree that security is not good enough.
there are drugs on every unit (wing), the inmates make there own alcohol and mobile phones are everywhere. all the things stated are rife.
if you have any questions about hollesley bay dont be afraid to ask.
