Blimey that place sparks some memories, infact I worked there in the kitchen with Lionel the chef and Rita Spinks mother of Debbie and Nigel Spinks, Rita still lives up Chantry. The Boss during this time was Mr Waterman and assistant manager Richard Studd who both left suddenly at the same time. I remember meeting a friend of Richards called John Walton, he owned a large mens cloths shop opposite Woolworths, do you remember John Waltons? buying broags, stay press and Ben Sherman shirts.
I remember the Americans were are biggest customers and there were many fights on a Saturday night when the local lads came down for a scrap, opposite the Buck was the Grey Green coach stop which served as a taxi rank and another place to argue over taxis if you could still stand up! I also knew a guy in Spring Road (Indian) with a garage called Alico's and he said if any Americans ask about where to buy a cheap car, send them here and I'll give you £5 everytime I get a sale. He never paid me a penny. The Buck as far as I was always told was not 16th Century as posted earlier, it was infact shipped in from Sweden as a log cabin style and erected on site. It did catch fire as mentioned and did host Cindy's at the back end as a nightclub with a new floor, lowered ceiling and not many lights. If you remember the original style in this area you will know the roof was very high with hanging black metal chandeliers.
I also frequented the Kingfisher up Chantry as my local and lived about 150 yards from the top shops, The Cabaret Bar used to host groups like Boy Baston. The Royal William was my second pub with my workmate (Chicken) Martin Pablecheque and Dicky Green (Maple Close) Sprugey. Me and Chicken used to go there with many of the Chantry lot who had bikes like Chicken Roper (YamYDS), Beaky (SuzGT250), Slots (YamYDS), Ted Vinyard, Micheal Gardner (Mouse), Andy Allen (Monkey), Robby Stewart, Malcolm Sheeran, Steven Sheeran.
Saddest moment during this time, (Chicken) Martin Pablecheque was killed at the top of Washbrook Hill (Old London Road A12) while riding on the back of Maxwell's Kawasaki 750cc two stroke monster, a learner driver pulled out of the Belstead turning. Scary moment, ending up in the Carribean club on my own after all my mates left without me.. second to this was trying to get into Tracey's nightclub in the old Greyfriars building (up the rubber escalator) and being confronted with big Jake who promptly punched me straight in the face, slammed the door and left me sitting on the floor in the rain. Best bike ride out to Snetterton to watch Race of the aces, 500cc and saw the late Barry Sheen.
Also remember the Sporting Farmer, Ipswich Arms, The Smock, Safe Harbour, The Chev Club, First Floor Club, Bandbox and the Blue Coat Boy. Hope these places bring back some good memories as most have gone now or turned into wine bars.
Chris

regulars of the Buck may well remember my mum Angie, who worked behind the bar for many years during the 70's I believe.
